My second semester of college has just started and it’s already RAD. I am CollegeFashionista’s newest Style Guru. Translation: I will be writing monthly articles HERE  about fashion at USC and trends that pop up on campus. For now you can read my Style Guru Bio, but stay tuned for another post coming next week! I’m so excited to be a part of such a rad group of college fashionistas and fashionistos and I can’t wait to see what styles USC has to offer.

Sustainability And Style

Levi Strauss has been talking about something different in terms of sustainability: consumer care of their products. I have found that most companies talk about the brand’s work to reduce their impact on the planet. The CEO of Levi’s is going past the company’s own corporate social responsibility and is challenging denim consumers to change their habits, too. In a lifecycle assessment of a pair of Levi jeans, findings concluded that “washing every ten times a product is worn instead of every two times reduces energy use, climate change impact, and water intake by up to 80 percent“. The assessment also found that American consumers had the highest use of water and non-renewable energy compared to France, England and China. The company says the best thing to do is wash your denim less. Alternatives to washing include hanging them outside in the sun, spot cleaning and soaking. If they really need a wash, use cold water and line dry them. Not only is this better for the environment, but it also preserves the shape and longevity of the jeans.

I’ve washed my mom jeans only a handful of times in the year that I’ve had them. Yes, they get quite dirty every once in a while and need a good wash, but keeping them out of the washing machine has made my jeans softer, more comfortable and more green. Shop some Levi jeans and more below and start washing less!
