Want to be sustainable in college but don’t know where to start? I started my sustainability journey as a freshman in college. In fact, the first college paper I ever wrote was about sustainability issues in the fashion industry. College is an amazing time to get involved in the environmental movement for many reasons. You have greater access to environmental resources like classes and speakers. There are environmental clubs and organizations where you can meet likeminded students. And you in a campus environment where you can create change – even as an individual.
One of the most common questions I get is how to be more sustainable in college. Personal sustainability is such an individual thing, because we all have different habits, priorities, struggles, etc. What may have worked for me in college may not work for you (or may be something you’re already doing). If you’re looking for ideas of where to start with individual actions, check out this post – 100 ways to live more sustainably. I go through different areas of your life and home where you can reduce waste and your impact on the planet.
The time you spend at college is also an incredible time to focus on larger-scale system change because of the communities you can join. You have the opportunity to advocate for sustainable changes on your campus like composting infrastructure, environmental education, and divesting from fossil fuels. You have an even louder voice as a student on your college campus than you may have as an individual in a country with millions of people.
