How To Have A Zero Waste Period

Over the past four years I have transitioned from using liners, tampons, and pads to a completely zero waste period. I started out by switching to organic cotton tampons, then invested in period underwear, and then finally made the switch to a menstrual cup. You by no means have to have a zero waste period (or a zero waste anything) to be part of the environmental movement, but this is something I’ve chosen to do to both reduce my waste and save money!

In the video below I take you through what inspired each of my sustainable swaps – from learning about endocrine disrupting pesticides in tampons to learning that the average person who menstruates disposes of 11,000+ menstrual products in their lifetime.

Zero Waste Period Products That I Use

  • Thinx underwear – ($24-42) get $10 of your order through this link! My favorite styles are the cotton briefs, cotton thong, and cheeky. Available in XXS-3X.
  • Sustain menstrual cup ($38)
  • Knix underwear – ($23-$38) Knix has a variety of fun colors and styles – they even have a few pairs with lace details that look more like normal underwear! I have two pairs of their high absorbency underwear and cannot recommend them enough. (also check out Knixteen, Knix’s teen / tween sister brand) Available in XS-4XL
  • Nixit cup – ($42) This kind of a cup is actually called a disc – it is suction free (and therefore easier to remove) and for many this shape of cup is easier to insert.
