I have made a major effort recently to learn more about sustainability, the climate crisis, and it’s solutions. I’ve read books about all different topics: sustainable living, the Green New Deal, mending clothing, and even sustainable business strategies. Here are some of my favorite books about sustainability and the climate crisis.
Books About Climate Science & Solutions
All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis
If you’re looking for an uplifting solutions-focused book, this is the book for you. All We Can Save is a collection of essays and poems from women at the forefront of the climate movement. A variety of problems and solutions are discussed. Everything from Indigenous climate wisdom to real estate development on land expected to be underwater in the near future. It is easy for books focused on climate to be disheartening and scary, but the way the contributors in All We Can Save approach solutions is very hopeful.
This is also a great book if you like to read in short snippets. The short essay format makes it easy to pick the book back up even after a break.
This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate
If you’re looking for an acclaimed book on climate, this is the book for you. This Changes Everything has been heralded as the best climate book since Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. Naomi Klein addresses the relationship between capitalism and the climate crisis. She argues that we cannot simply the climate crisis without addressing an economic system that is failing us.
Blunt but informative, Klein lays it all out there in this book. It will make you think and will challenge the way you look at the climate crisis and capitalism.
On Fire: The Burning Case For A Green New Deal
If you want to get into the nitty gritty of the Green New Deal, this is the book for you. Another great book by Naomi Klein, On Fire talks about why sweeping climate action can be used to build a more just society. This is an especially timely read, as President Biden’s American Jobs Plan proves that climate policy can lead to the creation of jobs.
On Fire is an aptly-named urgent take on why we need a Green New Deal and why we need it now.
Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants
If you’re looking to learn more about Indigenous wisdom regarding sustainability and connection to the Earth, this is the book for you. A collection of essays in five parts, this book explores Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and how they can be used together. This is a must-read for everyone in the climate movement, as Indigenous communities have been and continue to be leaders in stewardship of the earth.
Books About Sustainability In Business
Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman
If you want to learn about a business owner’s approach to sustainability, this is the book for you. Patagonia has long been called a true sustainable business. In this book the founder, Yvon Chouinard, goes through Patagonia’s history – from being a climbing gear company focused on quality to becoming a fashion and equipment company committed to sustainability. It is fascinating to learn about the journey of the brand and hear Yvon’s thought process as the business grew and evolved.
There are great examples of business decisions Patagonia made over the years to stay committed creating quality sustainable products.
Strategy For Sustainability: A Business Manifesto
If you want to learn about how sustainability can be a business strategy, and not just an additional cost, this is the book for you. This was by far the best book I read in graduate school. It was released in 2009 so some of the examples are outdated, but the themes and lessons in the book continue to hold true today. It is a fairly quick read and easy to understand compared to most other business books.
This book would be valuable for anyone in any industry, regardless if sustainability is a current strategy for your company/industry or not.
