How To Use Sustainable Shampoo Bars | Spring & Vine

This post is sponsored by Spring & Vine. All opinions are my own.

One of the first low-waste swaps I made in my sustainability journey was replacing my bottled shampoos with shampoo bars. Three years later shampoo bars are still a staple in my low-waste haircare routine. In the past, I have gotten my shampoo bars from specialty zero waste shops or farmer’s market stands. But since I haven’t been frequenting these places during the pandemic, I have been on the hunt for a more accessible option that still works with my finicky hair. So, when I found out about Spring & Vine shampoo bars that are available at Target, I was thrilled!

About Spring & Vine Shampoo Bars

I love Spring & Vine’s minimal packaging and concentrated formula. Compared to traditional 12.6 oz bottles of shampoo, Spring & Vine shampoo bars are made with up to 95% less plastic and use 90% less water. I didn’t know this until I made the switch to shampoo bars, but the first ingredient in many bottled shampoo formulas is water! One of my favorite sustainability topics in college was reducing packaging by using concentrated formulas. Why use more packaging for something if a more concentrated formula can be packaged in something smaller or more easily recycled? Even though Spring & Vine shampoo bars fit in the palm of your hand and come in an easy to recycle box, it will last as long as a traditional bottle of shampoo (and work just as well) because of its concentrated formula.

How To Use Shampoo Bars

It took me some time to figure out how to best use shampoo bars so here are my tips for washing your hair with a Spring & Vine shampoo bar:

  1. Wet your hair first
  2. Run the shampoo bar between your hands to create a lather
  3. Massage the lather into your hair, focusing on your scalp – I don’t recommend rubbing the bar directly onto your hair if you have long hair!
  4. Rinse well

And an extra pro-tip: To make your shampoo bar last as long as possible, make sure it’s stored somewhere where it will dry between washes. I store mine in this upcycled travel tin. Though the shampoo bar can rest in the tin, I added rubber bands so the bottom of the bar can dry as well.

Types of Shampoo Bars

Spring & Vine has four different variations of its shampoo bars. All of them work for all hair types, are made with the same quality, easy-to-understand ingredients — shea butter, jojoba oil, and essential oils — and are cruelty-free, vegan, sulfate-free, and free of synthetic fragrances.

My favorite Spring & Vine shampoo bar is the Balanced Clean Lavender & Orange Blossom Shampoo Bar. I have thin hair that gets oily easily, but this shampoo bar makes my hair feel clean and doesn’t leave behind any residue. The Volumizing Grapefruit & Rosemary Shampoo Bar is the shampoo bar I’ll try next as I am always looking for more volume with my thin hair. The Moisturizing 2 in 1 Oatmeal Shampoo Bar is great for people looking for a product that cleans and conditions at the same time, and the Scalp Soothing Tea Tree & Mint Shampoo Bar cools your scalp as it cleans.
