Since my “where to shop for sustainable & ethical fashion” post has been able to be a resource to so many of you, I wanted to create a similar resource for home products. This is by no means an exhaustive list of sustainable home options and this list will be updated regularly. Leave a comment if you have a brand or product you love that you don’t see included in this list!

  • Marley’s Monsters – female founded – Marley’s Monsters is a zero waste essentials online shop. They have kitchen and dining products, like food storage and reusable UNpaper towels, and cleaning products. I got my favorite reusable UNpaper towels from them and haven’t bought paper towels in two years! All products ship plastic free.
  • No Tox Life – female founded – No Tox Life carries a variety of kitchen and cleaning products made from sustainable and vegan materials. They carry vegan dish soap blocks, nordic dish washing sponges, and various brushes and sponges.
  • Package Free Shop – female founded – Package Free Shop sells package-free, zero waste, and reusable bathroom, bedroom, cleaning, cooking, kitchen, storage, and office products. I get a ton of my bathroom products from here – like my bamboo toothbrushes and refillable floss.   • Tiny Yellow Bungalow – female founded – Tiny Yellow Bungalow has sustainable kitchen, cleaning, travel, baby, and bath products. All products shipped in plastic free packaging.
  • Zero Waste Store – female founded – Zero waste apparel, cleaning, garden, hair care, home, kitchen, makeup, kids/baby, oral hygiene, personal hygiene, pet care, skincare, and travel products. Everything is packaged plastic-free and shipping is carbon neutral. Zero Waste Store also has Zero Waste Kits which are perfect for those that are new to sustainable living and are looking for reusable alternatives.

Sustainable Bedroom products

Bedding

  • Alterra Pure – Alterra Pure’s bedding is made by experts in textile sustainability. Their products are GOTS certified. Their organic co-op and cotton ginning operations are Fair Trade certified. And their cut & sew operations takes place in a LEED-certified facility that creates zero liquid discharge. Alterra Pure is one of the most transparent home brands I have come across and there is a ton of information available on their website. They sell sheet sets, duvet covers, pillow cases, and mattress pads.
  • Bearaby – female-founded – Sustainable weighted blankets made from organic cotton and TENCEL – no synthetic fillers are used. They are part of One Tree For The Planet and donate $1 from every purchase to NAMI.
  • Buffy – BIPOC owned – Buffy comforters and sheets are made with a variety of sustainable materials including recycled plastics, eucalyptus, and (soon) hemp. They offset all of their carbon emissions and have additional material certifications, like OEKO-Tex and GRS. I appreciate Buffy’s transparency about their current goals and where they would like to improve. Buffy sells comforters, sheet sets, pillows, and duvet covers. I have the Buffy Breeze comforter and the Eucalyptus Duvet Cover in white.
  • The Citizenry – female-founded – The Citizenry products are made in small batches by artisan groups. 10% of proceeds are invested back into those artisan communities. They sell linen sheets, pillowcases, duvets, and quilts.
  • Coyuchi – female-founded – Coyuchi sells Fair Trade Certified bedding made from various certified sustainable materials, like GOTS certified organic cotton and Climate Beneficial Wool. They have a ton of information about their certifications and commitments on their website under the “learn + inspire” section. Coyuchi sell duvet covers, sheets, blankets, pillows, duvet inserts, mattresses and mattress pads, towels, robes, and more.
  • Ettitude – BIPOC owned, female founded – Ettitude sells bedding, bath towels, pjs, and eye masks made from sustainably grown and sourced materials. Their bamboo bedding is 100% organic, antimicrobial, vegan, and naturally cooling.
  • Linoto – Black-owned – Linoto linen bedding is made in the New York (they are actually made in my hometown in New York with makes me love them even more). Linoto products are shipped in plastic-free recycled packaging. They sell sheets, towels, curtains, boxer shorts, table cloths, and napkins.
  • Sheets & Giggles – Sheets & Giggles makes lyocell bedding derived from Eucalyptus trees. They have a ton of sustainability certifications, including OEKO-Tex, FKT, and ZDHC. Sheets & Giggles donates 1% of their profits to nonprofits in their local community, plant one tree for every order they receive, and plant two trees for every eucalyptus tree they harvest to produce their products. They sell sheet sets, duvet covers, comforters, individual sheets and pillowcases, and throw blankets.
  • SOL Organics – BIPOC owned – SOL Organics sells bedding, duvet covers, and down comforters made from sustainable materials like linen and organic cotton. Their factory partners make living wages and they are committed to eradicating child labor and investing in the health and well-being of women and children where their products are made in India. Their products are Fair Trade and GOTS certified.

Candles

  • Evil Queen Candles – female-founded – Evil Queen candles are sassy, smell great, are handmade in Los Angeles, are vegan and non-toxic, and are made from 100% soy wax from soy grown in the US.
  • The Koop – Black-owned, female-founded – The Koop sells phthlate-free coconut & soy wax candles. They are hand-poured in New York.
  • Lit Soul Candles – Black-owned, female-founded – Lit Soul Candles has always been my favorite booth at Melrose Trading Post in Los Angeles. They sell coconut wax meditation candles in upcycled cans from food donations. Each candle has a high vibration crystal at the bottom.
  • Love Dose Candles – female-founded – Love Dose Candles are made in upcycled containers like mugs and jars with organic ingredients. Each product is unique.
  • Notes Candles – female-founded – Notes Candles are my absolute favorite refillable candle option. They’re all I ever use now! Refills are scented soy wax pellets that come in paper packaging, which is much lighter to ship and transport than a full candle in a glass container. It’s easy to refill and even when they aren’t actively burning they smell great.
  • 1502 Candle Co – female-founded – 1502 Candle Co’s materials are intentionally sourced and, fragrances are phthlate-free, and they are part of 1% for the planet. You can also get your 1502 Candles refilled when you send in a finished jar!

Furniture & Decor

  • Armadillo & Co – female-founded – A&Co sells Fair Trade handmade rugs made from natural and recycled materials. They are supporters of Care & Fair, an initiative against illegal child labor in the carpet industry in India, Nepal, and Pakistan.
  • The Citizenry – female-founded – The Citizenry products are made in small batches by artisan groups. 10% of proceeds are invested back into those artisan communities. You can learn about each of their partners from Japan, India, Portugal, Indonesia, Chile, Mali, Vietnam, Morocco, Ireland, Mexico, Uganda, Peru, and Argentina on their website. They sell rugs, pillows, throws and blankets, headboards, chairs, ottomans, tables, shelves, and other decor.
  • Linoto – Black-owned – Linoto linen curtains are made in the New York and are shipped in plastic-free recycled packaging.
  • Matr Boomie – artisan forward, BIPOC owned – Matr Boomie is a fair trade collection of home goods, jewelry, accessories, and home fragrances that blends the traditional artforms of India with timeless and modern design aesthetic. They partner with 1,500+ artisans in marginalized communities throughout India to create economic and sustainable living opportunities.

Sustainable bathroom products

Toilet

  • Reel Toilet Paper – BIPOC co-owned – Reel sells toilet paper made from bamboo. There are no inks, dyes, or BPA in their products and they ship directly to you in plastic-free packaging. They parter with SOIL, an organization that provides toilets, removes waste, and transforms it into compost which is used to support agriculture, reforestation, and climate change mitigation efforts in Haiti.
  • Tushy – BIPOC owned, female founded – Tushy, brought to you by the founder of Thinx period underwear, is most well known for its easy to install toilet seat bidet attachment. They also sell bamboo “bum” towels, bamboo toilet paper, and expandable, portable bidets.
  • Who Gives A Crap Toilet Paper – I have been using this toilet paper for the past two years or so and I absolutely love it. It ships plastic-free with each roll wrapped in paper. I normally order the recycled toilet paper (recycled paper turned into toilet paper, not recycled used toilet paper) but they also have bamboo toilet paper. Who Gives A Crap also sells tissues and paper towels. WGAC is also a certified B Corporation!

Towels

  • The Citizenry – female-founded – The Citizenry products are made in small batches by artisan groups. 10% of proceeds are invested back into those artisan communities. They sell bath towels and bath mats, shower curtains, and wooden bath mats and standing towels racks.
  • Ettitude – BIPOC owned, female founded – Ettitude’s towels and bath robes are made from bamboo lyocell.
  • Linoto – Black-owned – Linoto sells linen spa towels, bath sheets, hand towels, and wash cloths. Their products are made in New York and are shipped in plastic-free recycled packaging.
  • Marley’s Monsters – female founded – Marley’s Monsters has washable cotton rounds made from cotton flannel which are a great alternative to traditional single-use cotton rounds. I use mine when I use toner or makeup remover. Marley’s Monsters also has bamboo face and washcloths.
  • SOL Organics – BIPOC owned – SOL Organics sells plush organic bath towels and bath sheets. Their products are Fair Trade and GOTS certified.

Dining

  • The Citizenry – female-founded – The Citizenry products are made in small batches by artisan groups. 10% of proceeds are invested back into those artisan communities. They sell napkins and table runners made from cotton sourced local to their artisan communities and other dining items like mugs, coasters, planters, and glasses.

  • Stasher Bags – BIPOC woman owned – Stasher bags are great reusable alternatives to plastic ziplock bags. These silicone bags come in plenty of different sizes for snacks, sandwiches, or long-term storage. They are microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and can be used for sous vide cooking. I use mine to store veggie scrap for broth in the freezer or to freeze extra soup if I won’t eat it right away.
  • Tiny Yellow Bungalow – female founded – Tiny Yellow Bungalow has various food storage and low-waste kitchen items, including metal ice cube trays, stainless steel food storage tiffins, cotton snack bags, and stainless steel condiment containers.
  • Bee Kind Beeswax Wraps – female founded – Bee Kind sells beeswax wraps which are a great alternative to plastic wrap. Their wraps come in various sizes so you can make large bags to hold lettuce, cover a tray of food, or do the classic beeswax wrap activities like wrapping half eaten avocados or other fruits. They also have organic cotton reusable mesh drawstring bags which are great for buying loose produce in grocery stores and plastic-free dish brushes. Miscellaneous Kitchen

  • Almond Cow – If you buy a lot of nut milks and want to get into making them on your own the Almond Cow is perfect. You insert your nut (or oat) of choice into the Almond Cow machine and it creates 5-6 cups of milk with all of the hard and messy work done for you.

Sustainable Laundry products

detergents

  • Blueland – female co-founded – Blueland’s Laundry Starter Set contains naked laundry tablets that don’t come individually wrapped in plastic film (PVA/PVOH). They come in a reusable steel tin and you can buy refill packages. They are made without triclosan, parabens, phosphates, chlorine bleach, MEAs, DEAs, TEAs, SLES, petroleum, artificial dyes or fragrances.
  • Dirty Labs – Dirty Labs makes ultra-concentrated laundry detergent. A 6.6floz bottle is good for 32 loads of laundry! Dirty Labs is Environmental Working Group certified, a USDA certified Bio Based product, and is even accepted by the National Eczema Association to be safe and gentle on sensitive skin.
  • Dropps – Dropps laundry detergent and fabric softener pods are like the sustainable version of Tide Pods. They come in environmentally responsible packaging, are made with plant-derived materials, and are free of unnecessary chemicals. They have sensitive skin, unscented, and small load options. Dropps also sells wool dryer balls, laundry bags, and dish detergent pods.   • Eco Nuts Soap Nuts – female founded – These soap nuts are a berry shell that naturally contains a cleaning agent that works like detergent. They grow on the Sapindus mukorossi (Soap Berry) tree in the Himalayas. These are a package-free, reusable alternative to traditional detergents.
  • Pur-Home – Black-owned, female founded – Natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly laundry detergent and household cleaners
  • The Simply Co from Package Free Shop – female founded – This laundry detergent is made from organic and natural ingredients and can last up to 60 loads of laundry. You only use 1 tbsp for small loads and 2 for bigger loads. It’s also made in the US and packaged in a large glass jar.
  • Sheets Laundry Club – Sheets sells laundry sheets. They look like dryer sheets but actually dissolve into a laundry detergent in the washing machine. Their packaging and shipping materials are recyclable, and because their product is so concentrated and lightweight they are able to ship 6 times as much product as other laundry brands in the same amount of packaging.
  • Tru Earth Laundry Sheets – These laundry strip packs are ultra-concentrated, hypoallergenic, and liquidless. You tear off a piece of the sheet and toss it in the washing machine and it dissolves just like a laundry pod would. These low-sudsing sheets are biodegradable, paraben-free, free of added dyes, and vegan.

Microfiber filters

Synthetic materials are often derivatives of petroleum, so when these materials are washed in washing machines they release plastic microfibers.

  • Cora Ball – female founded – Cora Ball is a microfiber catching ball that you throw in with your laundry. A study concluded that Cora Ball catches 26% of microfibers that go down the drain! Once you’ve collected enough of the microfibers to actually see them you can pull them out and dispose of them in the trash.
  • Girlfriend Collective Microfiber Filter – female founded – This microfiber filter attaches directly to a washing machine’s discharge hose. It can capture microfiber particles as small as 72 microns. If you have your own washing machine this is a great option.
  • Guppyfriend Bags – Guppyfriend mesh washing bags protect your clothes while you wash them to reduce microfiber shed by preserving the clothes’ fabric and catches the microfibers that are released.

Miscellaneous

  • Eco Nuts Wool Dryer Balls – These are a great reusable alternative to dryer sheets.
  • Package Free Shop Stain Stick – female founded – This is a coconut oil stain stick that is great for rubbing directly on stained clothing before washing it.
  • Sheets Laundry Scent Boosters – These scent boosters have scents similar to Downy Unstoppables products but come in recyclable packaging and are made with non-toxic and eco-friendly ingredients (though they do use synthetic fragrances to last through the rinse cycle)
