What I Love About Girlfriend Collective Underwear (And What I Don’t)

girlfriend collective underwear and socks review

Girlfriend Collective underwear is here! I bought a few pairs of underwear and some socks the day these collections launched and I’m sharing my honest review below.

Girlfriend is one of my ride or die sustainable brands for so many reasons. They are absolutely unapologetic in their commitment to slow fashion. Girlfriend has taken responsibility for the microplastic pollution that can come from washing their recycled plastic material with the release of their microfiber filter. They are one of the most inclusive brands I have come across in the sustainable fashion industry. In terms of size (XXS – 6XL) and price (priced at or below their non-sustainable competitors like Lululemon).

Finding sustainable underwear has been a major struggle of mine. I admit that I’ve continued to buy from brands that I would rather not support, so I was thrilled to learn about the launch of Girlfriend’s new line of underwear and socks. Made from recycled polyester, both the socks and underwear are recyclable through Girlfriend’s take-back program ReGirlfriend. I took advantage of Girlfriend’s “Top Drawer Discount” and purchased 7 products to receive the maximum discount of $30.

This launch was also particularly special. 100% of the proceeds from this launch were donated to The Loveland Foundation, The Okra Project, and the NAACP Legal & Defense Fund — at a minimum of $20k each. Girlfriend partnered with eight different muses, all of whom were women of color who champion equality, opportunity and access for BIPOC communities.

Girlfriend Collective Socks

I got the crew socks in Pine and the quarter crew socks in Terra.

I’ll start this off by saying I’m not a huge sock gal. After working for footwear companies for the past two years I have become a no-show sock aficionado and have never been a wear-socks-around-the-house kind of person until quarantine started. Most of my socks are from bar and bat mitzvahs in middle school so I’ve been in need of an upgrade for quite some time.

These Girlfriend socks feel a bit thicker and rougher than I was expecting but they feel great on. I have high arches that need some extra support so I love the ribbed arches. I also often have trouble with ankle and calf-length socks because of my perpetually swollen ankles but these socks don’t feel too tight or too loose. If I had to pick a favorite out of these two pairs it would be the quarter crew socks. They are the perfect length for a pop of color while wearing sneakers.

Girlfriend Collective Underwear

I got two thongs in shell, one thong in black, one brief in black, and one brief in copper.

I have been consciously trying to move toward organic cotton underwear for the past few years but am always in need of no-show underwear. I haven’t found any sustainably made no-show underwear that I like, so I have bought from Victoria’s Secret more recently than I would like to admit. So when I saw Girlfriend was coming out with underwear that looked like it could replace the no-show underwear I’ve had for a while that is dying to be (sustainably) replaced I was thrilled.

The best part of this underwear is how the material stretches. With that Victoria’s Secret no-show underwear I always had issues of it tearing around the gusset or getting stretched out to the point where it would fall down. Though Girlfriend’s underwear has a similar amount of stretch, it feels sturdier. I am not nearly as concerned about it tearing or completely stretching out. After a few months of wear I’ll be sure to update you all on this.

Thong

This style is almost identical to the seamless underwear I have from other brands in terms of style. It has nice wide bands that won’t roll up or show through the sides of tighter pants or skirts, and the back is wide enough that I don’t feel like I have a perpetual wedgie throughout the day.

My one negative for this style is the width of the bottom front and the gusset. The best way I can describe it is that this thong style has about the same amount of front coverage as high cut swim bottoms (without the style actually being high cut). Sizing up could have given a bit more coverage but I’m afraid the bottoms would have been too loose, as they do fit true to size. I do still like the style and I didn’t necessarily find it uncomfortable, but if you’re a full coverage kind of gal I would recommend the briefs instead.

Mid-Rise Brief

When I purchased these I didn’t actually know they were mid-rise. I must have been so focused on placing my order before they sold out that I missed that detail, but I actually do like the style. I love that it is seamless around the sides but has a little seam down the butt. It gives me some cheeky vibes while still having pretty full coverage. If I have any feedback for this style it’s that the back seems to have a higher rise than the front (which purely could be because I don’t have much of a butt). This won’t be much of an issue for me because I exclusively wear high-waisted bottoms but it is something I noticed while wearing them around yesterday.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I am a fan of this collection. The quality is so apparent and I know I will have these items for a long time before I send them in to be recycled. At $14 per item before the bundle discounts, the prices are also really fair for a sustainably and ethically made product.
